Robb was the eldest legitimate son of Lord Eddard Stark, and heir to Winterfell. When Lord Eddard was called to King's Landing to become the King's Hand, Robb remained at Winterfell to rule in his father's stead. Upon Eddard's execution at the word of the newly raised King Joffrey I Baratheon, Robb was declared King in the North by his father's liegemen rather than swear fealty to the Lannister king, drawing the banners of the north and of the riverlands to his cause.
Robb did his best to be a good and just king, doing justice even against his allied lords. He proved a masterful commander on the field, by his victories earning the name Young Wolf. He won every military confrontation against the Lannisters, capturing Jaime Lannister in the battle of the Whispering Wood. Later, while recovering from a wound in a subsequent battle, he fell in love with and married Jeyne of the Westerlings, breaking his pledge to wed one of Lord Walder Frey's daughters. Unfortunately for the King of the North, Frey was a canny old man, and in league with the Lannisters; Robb, his mother Catelyn and his direwolf, Grey Wind, were murdered at the wedding of his uncle to one of Frey's daughters. He was sixteen years old.
